The useful distinctions

  • VLM configurations support named media elements and new, setup and control commands.
  • VLC can load a configuration with --vlm-conf.
  • The VLM wizard supports Export and Import.
  • The std output module supports a local file destination and chosen muxer.

Make the job inspectable

A reusable job is easier to maintain when its input, output and start action can be read together. Give the VLM element a descriptive name and keep the configuration small enough to review before running it. The purpose is repeatability: another session should not depend on remembering which values were entered in a wizard during an earlier experiment.

Separate the manager from the pipeline

VLM defines and controls a media element; the selected output module describes what happens to its media. The synthetic example uses a local destination and does not publish a network service. It also does not request a video encoder, so do not read its name as a promise to improve quality or make an arbitrary input suitable for a particular container. Choose an appropriate small source when evaluating the configuration.

Review before reusing

A saved file can outlive the source directory and output naming convention it originally assumed. Inspect both paths each time the job moves to another machine or collection. Keep an untouched original and select a distinct destination for experiments. If the job fails, separate a VLM parsing problem from a media-output problem in the report; the configuration and corresponding messages provide a clearer boundary than a screenshot of an empty player.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Choose a local input you own and a new output filename.
  2. Create the named VLM element, input, output and play command in a .vlm file.
  3. Review the destination before loading it with --vlm-conf or the VLM wizard Import.
  4. After a trial, retain the configuration alongside its version and result notes.

Worked example · synthetic

new workshop broadcast enabled
setup workshop input "workshop-input.ts"
setup workshop output #std{access=file,mux=ts,dst=workshop-output.ts}
control workshop play

Read the comparison

A reusable configuration preserves job instructions; it does not validate the selected media or guarantee output success.

When to stop or ask for help

If parsing fails, share the minimal synthetic-equivalent VLM and VLC version; if output fails, include matching messages.
