The useful distinctions

  • Jump to Specific Time accepts an hh:mm:ss value.
  • Custom Bookmarks, Manage opens the bookmark editor.
  • Create records the current playback position in that editor.

Use a timestamp as the common reference

A timestamp is useful when another person needs to find the same passage without inheriting your player state. Write down the media filename and a human-readable description of the section as well as the time. The example index describes three demonstration sections, so it remains understandable outside VLC. Treat the timestamp as an approximate navigation reference unless a separate frame-accurate workflow has established more precision.

Use bookmarks for repeated local review

When moving among several passages in one review session, bookmarks reduce repeated time entry. Give each marker a purpose rather than creating a dense list with no explanatory notes. A marker slightly before the important action can preserve the context needed to understand it. Verify the return point before relying on it for a live presentation or an editorial comparison.

Keep navigation independent of delivery

A bookmark does not edit the source or package a separate clip for somebody else. If the final deliverable is an excerpt, use a proper editing or conversion workflow with an explicit output file. If the deliverable is a review note, include the timestamp index. This prevents a convenient local navigation aid from becoming an undocumented dependency in work that must be reproducible on another computer.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Open the local recording and choose Playback, Jump to Specific Time.
  2. Enter the target hh:mm:ss time and select Go.
  3. Open Playback, Custom Bookmarks, Manage and create a bookmark at a useful point.
  4. Return through the bookmark manager and keep an independent timestamp note.

The time and bookmark controls aid navigation; no cross-session or cross-player bookmark portability is claimed.

When to stop or ask for help

If a time cannot be reached accurately, note file seek behavior and use a safe lead-in; do not promise frame accuracy from this workflow.
