The useful distinctions

  • The Windows Interface preferences contain Playlists and Instances controls.
  • Allow only one instance and the file-manager instance option are separate settings.
  • The documented Windows procedure clears both controls and saves preferences.

Decide what a second open should do

Opening another file can mean replacing the current programme, adding to a queue or creating another independently controlled player. Choose the behavior that fits the task before changing preferences. A two-window comparison benefits from separate controls, while a single continuous listening queue may not. The setting should follow that intention rather than become an unexplained global change made during unrelated troubleshooting.

Check both launch routes

The documented Windows controls distinguish ordinary instance behavior from files opened through the file manager. Include the launch route in your review because an application shortcut and a double-clicked file may not exercise the same choice. The synthetic worksheet below uses two local clips and records the intended outcome without claiming that their start positions or clocks will remain synchronized.

Interpret independence narrowly

Two windows are useful for visual inspection, but they do not constitute a controlled quality benchmark. Different start times, window sizes and active audio outputs can affect what a person perceives. Pause and inspect deliberately when comparing a source with an edited copy. If a second open still replaces the first, record the exact launch route and saved preferences before changing codec or rendering options that do not address instance selection.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Open Tools, Preferences and Interface.
  2. Find Playlists and Instances.
  3. Clear Allow only one instance and Use only one instance when started from file manager.
  4. Save, then open two synthetic-equivalent local files and inspect the resulting windows.

Worked example · synthetic

Comparison files: workshop-source.mp4 and workshop-review.mp4
Launch route: Windows file manager
Expected: two independent VLC windows
Not established: synchronized clocks or equal rendering conditions

Read the comparison

Independent windows establish separate player control, not synchronization or a playback-quality verdict.
