The useful distinctions

  • VLC documents Media, Convert/Save for conversion.
  • The dialog selects input, destination filename and a profile.
  • Start begins the chosen conversion operation.

Define the derivative first

Write one sentence describing why a new file is needed: a review copy, a smaller working file or a format required by a separate documented tool. That purpose determines the profile choice. A different filename extension is not enough information to choose codecs or quality. Keep the original recording as the reference so a disappointing conversion can be repeated without compounding prior losses.

Make the destination unmistakable

Use a separate output directory and a name that identifies the derivative. Avoid an output path identical to the input or a vague filename that will later be mistaken for the master. The worked example specifies a review-copy destination but does not prescribe a universal codec profile. Available encoders and profile details depend on the installed build, so inspect the actual profile before starting a long job.

Inspect the whole result

Open the derivative separately and check duration, picture, audio and the tracks that matter to the task. Compare a beginning, middle and ending passage so an early successful frame does not hide a truncated job. Keep a note of the selected profile and source filename if you need to reproduce the conversion. A smaller file alone is not evidence that the result meets the intended quality or device requirements.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Open Media, Convert/Save and add the authorised source file.
  2. Open the Convert action after selecting the input.
  3. Choose a new destination path that does not replace the original.
  4. Select an available profile appropriate to the intended derivative.
  5. Start, wait for completion and inspect the new file independently.

Worked example · synthetic

Input: /media/masters/workbench-demo.mkv
Output: /media/review/workbench-demo-review.mp4
Purpose: local review derivative
Profile: inspect and record an available profile before starting

Read the comparison

A completed conversion proves a derivative was created; its usefulness depends on the recorded profile and inspected result.

When to stop or ask for help

If conversion fails, capture the selected profile and VLC diagnostic messages; do not repeatedly overwrite the source.
