Applies to: A viewer receives an unexpected message claiming to be support.

The useful distinctions

  • Impersonation can use familiar organisation names and convincing presentation.
  • Urgency is not proof that a request is genuine.
  • A trusted route obtained independently is a stronger verification basis than the suspicious message’s own link.

Verify the route before the story

An unexpected contact may refer to a real problem and still be unverified. A familiar name, logo or accurate-looking expiry claim does not by itself establish who sent it. The viewer should confirm the route independently rather than use only the address or link included in the message. Keep the message’s technical claim separate from its identity claim. A genuine account question can be investigated without first accepting the contact’s request for secrets.

Keep the verification enquiry minimal

Use an independently known route to ask whether the request is genuine and what information the actual process needs. Do not forward usable access links, passwords or payment credentials into a public group for an opinion. If a screenshot of the contact is useful, redact sensitive content and other people’s details. This guidance does not identify any particular phone number, account or domain as official; the route must be verified from the viewer’s actual trusted source.

Hypothetical worked example

A fictional message claims that a viewer’s access will expire immediately unless they provide a secret through its attached link. The viewer does not use that link to establish the sender’s identity. They return to their independently verified support route and ask whether any action is required. The enquiry separates the expiry question from the unverified demand and uses no real credentials, contact details or payment action.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Pause before sending secrets or following the message’s supplied route.
  2. Return to a support channel already verified independently.
  3. Ask there whether the request and necessary action are genuine.

When to stop or ask for help

Continue only through the independently verified route and follow its actual minimum-information process.
