Applies to: Tvheadend rolling official documentation read 2026-11-08; many examples are from 4.3-era builds; verify availability against installed build; no tuner or server tested; advanced development use of tsfile input; not a production server launch recipe
The useful distinctions
- The documented flags are tsfile_tuners and tsfile.
- The input must contain the whole mux rather than one service.
- Tvheadend creates matching network, mux, service and channel objects.
- The file content replays continuously.
Choose an isolated reproduction
A developer may need to investigate parsing or discovery behavior for a system that is unavailable locally. A recorded input can make that investigation repeatable, but it should be used in a separate development environment. Preserve the production configuration and do not treat the example as a reason to start a second process against an existing server’s state directory.
Check the sample boundary
The whole-mux requirement matters because a single selected programme does not contain the same discovery context. Use material you are authorized to retain and share, and document how much of the relevant input it represents. The synthetic command names a fictional file only; it includes no stream address, copying instruction or claim that such a file has been supplied or validated in this research.
Interpret replay carefully
The generated objects and repeated playback make the sample useful for controlled application investigation. They do not recreate the live reception conditions, changing broadcasts or physical tuner characteristics of the original environment. Note where the loop repeats when collecting observations so a replay boundary is not mistaken for a fresh live event. Share the minimal lawful sample and build information with the developer only when that is appropriate to the investigation.
A focused way to proceed
- Use an isolated development instance and an authorized local whole-mux sample.
- Confirm that the sample contains the required whole mux.
- Launch the file-backed tuner configuration and inspect the generated objects.
- Reproduce the intended case while accounting for the repeating input.
Worked example · synthetic
tvheadend --tsfile_tuners 1 --tsfile workshop-whole-mux.tsRead the comparison
A file-backed reproduction tests application handling of that input; it does not test real reception hardware.
When to stop or ask for help
If discovery differs from the source environment, provide build information and the sample’s mux scope to the developer.
