Applies to: A viewer changes between two identified feeds of the same event or programme.
The useful distinctions
- A programme identity and a feed identity are different pieces of context.
- Language metadata describes a particular component or edition.
- The actual offered tracks must be checked on the feed being considered.
Keep the feed in the record
When two feeds show the same recognisable programme, it is tempting to treat every associated track as interchangeable. The programme title can match while the supplied language components differ. Record which feed produced each observation, including a stable identifier if one is supplied. A note that says the film has French subtitles loses the distinction between the edition actually checked and another edition that only shares the work’s title.
Compare components independently
Write down the spoken and text choices for each feed rather than copying one set into the other row. If the viewer needs original audio with a particular caption format, check that combination on the intended feed. A difference is an edition enquiry until the source confirms otherwise. It does not by itself show that an automatic preference was ignored or that the household’s language settings changed unexpectedly.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional event appears on feeds North-F and South-F at the same dated occurrence. The viewer observes Spanish commentary on North-F and a different offered set on South-F. Their report names both feeds and the exact text requirement still unconfirmed on South-F. They do not transfer North-F’s language result to South-F or describe the event title as proof that both feeds must carry identical audio and caption editions.
A focused way to proceed
- Record both feed identifiers and the shared programme occurrence.
- Keep their audio and text labels in separate rows.
- Compare the actual editions before generalising a result across feeds.
When to stop or ask for help
Ask about the language components of the intended feed and occurrence, retaining the other feed only as comparison evidence.
