Applies to: The visible channel name has changed while the underlying guide reference appears unchanged.

The useful distinctions

  • XMLTV distinguishes channel identifiers from display names.
  • One identity may have more than one display name.
  • A changed label alone does not establish changed programming.

Do not turn a rename into a new identity without evidence

A display label is what the viewer sees; an identifier is a separate reference used by the guide data. A provider may alter spelling, branding or a language label without changing the intended schedule. Conversely, an unchanged identifier does not guarantee that the service has never changed. The practical question is whether the programme association still describes the service being watched, not whether the new name looks different in a list.

Look for continuity in the programme evidence

Retain both labels temporarily and compare the programme sequence across the rename. Use a dated service schedule or a clear programme boundary rather than a remembered logo. If the sequence and edition remain correct, record the rename as a presentation observation. If the service itself is different, keep that separate evidence for support. Avoid editing an opaque identifier to imitate the new display name; doing so may remove a valid association rather than repair one.

Hypothetical worked example

A fictional service changes its displayed name from “Harbor Television” to “Harbor TV” on 8 November 2026. Its guide reference remains `harbor.example`, and two consecutive programmes still agree with the intended dated schedule. The viewer records both names and the successful comparison. A rename is a reasonable working explanation here, while changing the identifier solely to match the shorter label would add an unsupported alteration.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Keep the old and new displayed names in a private note.
  2. Check the current and following programme against the intended service.
  3. Change the association only after confirming that the service identity changed.

When to stop or ask for help

Report the rename and programme comparison; request a new association only if identity evidence supports it.
