Applies to: Apple TV HD/4K with supported frame-rate matching; a clip whose original frame rate is known.

The useful distinctions

  • Apple’s frame-rate matching follows the content’s original frame rate.
  • Apple documents matching for 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps content.
  • Apple can double 25 and 30 fps output to 50 and 60 Hz when available.

Use one moving reference

A slow pan across evenly spaced objects makes repeated cadence easier to describe than an action montage. Start from the same position each time. Keep viewing distance, display picture mode and motion processing fixed. Record the known clip rate separately from the HDMI output rate. If the original rate is unknown, describe the experiment as a preference comparison rather than a verified cadence match.

Separate switching from motion

Wait until the image has returned after any display-format transition. The comparison concerns movement during continuous playback, while the transition itself is a separate observation. Count repeatable small hesitations or describe their rhythm. Do not use the television’s high refresh figure as evidence that every source contains that many distinct frames.

Choose an evidence-led outcome

An improvement that follows matching and returns to the previous cadence after restoration supports using the matched path for that clip. No visible change is also a useful result. It may mean the original path already handled the cadence well or that another stage dominates perception. This short experiment cannot certify all apps, all content rates or every model’s response to a requested mode.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Choose one known-rate clip with a slow horizontal pan.
  2. Record the fixed output mode and replay the pan.
  3. Compare with supported frame-rate matching, preserving other processing.
  4. Ignore the switching interval and judge the uninterrupted pan.
  5. Return to the fixed setting to confirm the perceived difference.

Worked example · synthetic

Hypothetical example: a known 24 fps pan shows a regular small hitch with a fixed output and a more even cadence when the supported matching route is active. The result concerns that clip, app and display chain; it does not add new source frames.

When to stop or ask for help

If playback actually stops or shows a loading state, investigate that stall separately. Matching support and available modes vary by hardware and app.
