Applies to: A household relies on text for audio information and wants a useful pre-viewing sample.

The useful distinctions

  • Meaningful non-speech audio can be part of caption coverage.
  • A representative check should match the viewer’s actual information need.
  • One successful sample does not certify an entire programme or service.

Choose an informative sample

An opening conversation may show that the track is readable and follows the speakers. It does not reveal whether off-screen actions or important sound cues are conveyed. Choose a short, lawful viewing sample that includes a meaningful non-speech event as well as speech. The aim is not an exhaustive audit. It is to test the household’s practical need with enough variety that a positive result means more than one line happened to appear.

Keep the conclusion bounded

Write what the sample did and did not demonstrate. If the selected scene includes an unseen telephone ring, note whether its presence is communicated. If it contains only dialogue, say that sound coverage remains untested. Avoid converting a brief successful sample into a claim about every episode, every caption event or a service’s accessibility conformance. A precise small result is more useful than a broad assurance that the evidence cannot support.

Hypothetical worked example

A fictional viewer checks edition CQ-4 at 03:10, where two characters speak, and at 07:25, where a sound outside the frame changes their behaviour. They record whether the offered English captions convey both kinds of information. If only the dialogue scene was available, the viewer reports that limitation and asks for confirmation of sound-inclusive coverage. The sample is a practical selection aid, not a certification of the programme.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Identify a short scene with dialogue and a meaningful sound event.
  2. Record the edition, text label and scene time.
  3. Check the sound information separately from whether spoken words appear.

When to stop or ask for help

Ask about the unresolved sound-information requirement and retain the sample scope in any support enquiry.
