Applies to: Windows 11 PC using an external HDR display with HDR enabled; the compared reference is known SDR.
The useful distinctions
- Microsoft documents relative SDR/HDR brightness adjustment.
- On external HDR displays, the SDR brightness control changes SDR brightness relative to HDR.
- Some apps may respond differently to this adjustment.
Identify the desktop context
The same SDR reference may look different when viewed through an HDR desktop configuration. Record that context before adjusting the TV’s entire picture. The question is whether the relative SDR presentation in this Windows configuration explains the complaint. It is not a test of whether the online source suddenly changed its master or supplied a different quality tier.
Keep the references separate
Use known SDR material for the first comparison and a known HDR reference only as a separately identified check. Keep app, window location and display fixed. If an app does not visibly respond, note that result rather than repeatedly changing the slider. Moving the window to another monitor can change the path and invalidate an apparent before-and-after result.
Choose the next adjustment deliberately
If the control changes the SDR reference in a useful way, retain the value only as a viewing preference for that setup. It does not certify accurate calibration. If only one app remains abnormal, collect its version and the comparison result for support. Avoid combining a Windows balance adjustment with display contrast, gamma and brightness changes in the same run.
A focused way to proceed
- Confirm the actual selected external display and HDR state.
- Open one known SDR reference and record its appearance.
- Compare one supported SDR brightness-balance change.
- Observe the same reference and a known HDR reference separately.
- Restore the initial value and record app-specific differences.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: a known SDR desktop video looks overly bright on an external HDR monitor, and a supported SDR balance adjustment changes that reference while the separately checked HDR sample behaves differently. The user records an SDR presentation issue, not an HDR-source defect.
When to stop or ask for help
The cited behaviour differs between external and built-in displays. Use the applicable Windows section and exact app/display path.
