Applies to: Plex TV Series agent; client support differs for show/season/episode extras
The useful distinctions
- Show and season extras use typed subdirectories at their corresponding levels.
- Episode extras match the episode basename and add a documented suffix.
- An existing show may need a whole-show metadata refresh after extras are added.
- TV extras are not displayed at every hierarchy level by every client.
Use scope as the first decision
A general series trailer and an explanation of one episode serve different browsing needs. Place the clip where its context is clear to someone who has never seen the collection before. A show-level folder should contain supporting material for the series as a whole, while a season-specific production note belongs with that season. Do not rely on a descriptive title alone to compensate for the wrong hierarchy.
Preserve the episode relationship
For an episode extra, start from the exact episode basename rather than typing an approximate title from memory. This makes the intended association visible when the directory is inspected. The worked example uses one fictional show and one bonus feature, with no downloaded source material. Keep the original file and a small manifest while preparing the naming so an accidental association can be corrected.
Check the viewing client
A successful server refresh does not imply that every client exposes every extras level. Test the client that will actually be used before changing file names again. Compare the official client-support matrix when the server arrangement appears correct but a season or episode extra is absent. Record the level that is missing, because a report that simply says extras do not work leaves out the most useful distinction.
A focused way to proceed
- Choose whether the clip belongs to the show, a season or one episode.
- Place show/season clips in the corresponding documented typed directory.
- For an episode extra, retain the episode basename and add a suffix such as -featurette.
- Refresh the show and inspect it in a client supporting that level.

A clip may be correctly attached on the server but hidden by a client that lacks that extras level.
