Applies to: Plex TV Series agent; alternate per-show orders documented from PMS 1.40.4

The useful distinctions

  • The library root normally contains individual show folders.
  • Season-based names use sXXeXX; season directories use the word Season.
  • Per-show alternate ordering is documented from PMS 1.40.4.
  • A multi-episode file still plays as the full file for its represented episodes.

Treat order as catalogue data

A disc sequence, an aired sequence and a provider’s alternate sequence may number the same story differently. Decide which sequence the files follow before renaming. A clean filename does not resolve that semantic difference. Keep a short mapping for unusual shows so a future scan or library migration has a clear reference instead of relying on remembered episode titles.

Check the selected directory level

The content location should make the collection’s show folders visible at the expected level. A root that accidentally points inside one season or above several unrelated media types can obscure an otherwise sensible structure. The fictional example uses a single show and ordinary season identifiers, which makes the intended hierarchy easy to inspect outside the application. Keep optional technical labels separate from episode identity.

Review combined recordings deliberately

If one file covers several episodes, library entries do not turn it into independent files. That affects navigation and replacement decisions. Test an ordinary episode, a special and a joined recording if your collection contains them. A consistent sequence of wrong plots usually deserves an ordering review before a wholesale matching reset. Preserve the original names until the pilot confirms both the identity and the intended order.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Choose the metadata ordering that matches the actual recordings.
  2. Create show and Season NN folders beneath the TV root.
  3. Name individual episodes with the matching season/episode identifiers.
  4. For a supporting server, set the show’s Episode ordering in its Advanced edit settings.
  5. Scan and compare a normal episode and an ordering exception.

Read the comparison

Separate episode entries can reference one joined file; independent playback requires independently prepared files.
