Applies to: PMS 1.43.1+; Plex NFO Movie or Plex NFO Series
The useful distinctions
- The native NFO agents require PMS 1.43.1 or later.
- The library Advanced pane selects Plex NFO Movie or Plex NFO Series.
- Movie NFO can be movie.nfo or match the video basename.
- This agent has documented watch-state-sync and music limitations.
Choose local metadata for a reason
An original recording may need a title and description that no public catalogue can provide. A local NFO workflow makes that editorial content explicit beside the media. Keep the first pilot small and preserve an original copy of every authored sidecar. Do not migrate an established library merely because a new agent exists; define the recovery and browsing benefits the change is intended to deliver.
Respect the version boundary
Older advice about Plex and NFO files may describe a different era of the product. Check the actual server version and available native agent rather than installing an unrelated plugin to imitate the current feature. The fictional example uses a minimal movie description and local assets. It does not invent a public provider identifier, and it does not assume that every Kodi tag will have identical behavior in another application.
Review the library contract
Confirm the title, plot and media path after the pilot import. Read the documented limits for watch-state synchronisation, music and extras before scaling the arrangement. If stable identity is important across rescans, plan appropriate consistent identifiers using the agent’s current guidance. Keep authored metadata under ordinary backup so the library can be understood and rebuilt without relying solely on an application database.
A focused way to proceed
- Confirm the server version supports the native NFO agent.
- Prepare a pilot movie folder with a UTF-8 NFO and authorised local artwork.
- Open Settings, Manage, Libraries and add a Movies pilot library.
- In Advanced, select Plex NFO Movie before saving.
- Inspect the imported title/plot and document the agent’s relevant limitations.

The native feature is version-scoped; no claim is made for earlier servers or universal NFO-tag parity.
When to stop or ask for help
If the agent is missing, confirm server version and refresh the web interface using the official guide before considering alternatives.
