The useful distinctions

  • Multiple versions can collapse into one movie item.
  • The documented filename form adds a hyphen and useful arbitrary text.
  • Clients normally request a suitable version automatically.
  • Manual version choice is unavailable in some Plex apps.

Keep content identity stable

Compare duration and content before treating two files as versions of the same release. A different ending or extended sequence belongs to a different editorial identity, even if resolution is the most obvious filename difference. Record which file is the preservation master and which is a working derivative. That makes later housekeeping less likely to remove the only copy of a distinct cut.

Use suffixes for maintainers

A useful suffix tells a person outside Plex why two files exist. It can describe a resolution or an encoding choice, but it should not be mistaken for a guaranteed menu label in every client. Keep the naming convention short and consistent across the collection. The worked example uses two fictional local derivatives without asserting which device will choose either one.

Inspect the grouped item

After scanning, inspect both underlying file paths rather than counting poster tiles alone. A single tile could mean successful grouping or a missing file. When testing playback locally, record the actual version selected by the client. Do not plan an important demonstration around a manual version selector until the specific client has shown that control. Automatic choice is part of the documented design, so the workflow should remain understandable when no selector is offered.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Confirm that both files contain the same release or cut.
  2. Place them in one correctly named movie folder.
  3. Give each file the shared title/year identity plus a distinct technical suffix.
  4. Scan and inspect the item’s underlying media parts.
  5. Use Play Version only where the actual client exposes it.

Read the comparison

A grouped movie can contain several files; the client’s selected version still needs observation.

When to stop or ask for help

If a file is missing from the group, inspect naming, identity and the server’s Get Info details before forcing a merge.
