The useful distinctions

  • Local extras can be inline files or documented typed subdirectories.
  • Current Plex Movie uses the library Use local Assets option.
  • New extras on existing movies may require Refresh Metadata.
  • Multiple movie editions need separate named folders for their extras.

Decide which release owns the extra

Supporting material can describe one cut, one production or the film generally. Decide where it belongs before copying it into every edition folder. This prevents a comparison clip for one release from being presented as if it were part of another. Use a brief ownership note for ambiguous material and keep the original authorised file available for future reorganisation.

Prefer a readable bundle

Typed subdirectories make the purpose visible outside Plex and avoid a crowded movie directory with many similarly named files. A descriptive clip name helps a viewer choose between several interviews. The synthetic example uses original workshop material associated with a fictional film and does not locate or download copyrighted extras. The directory labels come from the documented conventions, while the clip names explain your own content.

Review presentation after discovery

After the metadata refresh, confirm the extra is attached to the intended movie and not listed as an unrelated main title. Check the clip’s own picture and sound before a presentation. If the same extra appears in two releases intentionally, document that decision instead of treating duplication as automatically wrong. A tidy extras list should preserve useful context without becoming a second unexplained movie collection beneath one poster.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Choose the movie or edition that owns the authorised extra.
  2. Place the clip in a documented folder such as Interviews or Behind The Scenes.
  3. Enable local assets under the active movie agent’s instructions.
  4. Refresh the movie and inspect its extras list.

Read the comparison

Discovering an extra attaches supporting media; it does not establish rights or universal client presentation.

When to stop or ask for help

If missing, inspect local-asset settings, exact directory names and the selected edition before renaming every clip.
