The useful distinctions
- Plex recommends separate roots for major media types.
- Individual movie folders use Title (Year) naming.
- Current Plex Movie supports verified IMDb/TMDB IDs in curly-brace tags.
Resolve ambiguity before scanning
Two films may share a title while differing in release year, so decide which work each file represents before asking the library to match it. Maintain a rename inventory containing old path, new path and intended identity. It is especially useful when a collection contains a remake, a festival release or a recording whose file date differs from its release date.
Make the directory a useful bundle
Keep a movie and its authorised sidecar assets together. This lets a maintainer understand the relationship without opening Plex and makes later copying less error-prone. The synthetic example contains two fictional films with the same title but different years. It deliberately omits database IDs because an invented number would look authoritative while providing false matching information. Use only an identity you have independently verified.
Judge identity from several fields
After scanning, inspect title, year and underlying path together. A convincing poster is insufficient because a wrongly matched release can still have attractive artwork. Correct the small pilot before moving on to the full collection. If the same wrong identity returns repeatedly, review the naming and active agent rather than treating repeated refreshes as evidence that the scanner will eventually choose another work.
A focused way to proceed
- Separate movie files from television roots.
- Create one title/year folder per movie and name the main file consistently.
- Add a verified provider ID only when needed and supported by the agent.
- Scan a small representative set and inspect the resulting identities.

Naming helps matching; it does not establish whether a particular client can play the resulting file.
When to stop or ask for help
Report the intended title/year, active agent and actual file path if a cleanly named item still mismatches.
