The useful distinctions

  • Editions describe different releases or cuts.
  • Versions describe alternative encodings of the same release.
  • Renaming an existing file for an edition is treated as a new library item after scanning.
  • Editing edition information preserves the existing item’s watched state and customisation according to the guide.

Classify the difference honestly

A smaller encode of the same cut should not be labelled as a new creative release merely to make the library look tidier. Decide whether the running content differs or only the technical representation differs. Record that decision in the collection notes. This prevents two naming systems from gradually being used for the same purpose and makes later replacement of an encode easier to understand.

Protect existing catalogue work

An established item may carry watched history, a chosen poster and a carefully edited summary. Consider that state before renaming files to introduce an edition label. The documented Edit method is useful when the goal is to label the existing record. For a newly added cut, the filename approach makes the release identity visible outside Plex as well, especially when the media is backed up or inspected by another tool.

Keep assets attached to the cut

Put distinct cuts in distinct folders when they have their own extras or artwork. Compare title, edition, duration and file path after the change. A label alone is not proof that the correct recording is attached. Entitlements and feature availability can change, so confirm the edition control in the installed server rather than relying on old pricing or capability summaries.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Identify whether the difference is a cut or only an encoding.
  2. Back up metadata before changing an existing catalogue.
  3. For an existing item, use the edition field in the supported Edit interface.
  4. For a new file, apply the documented edition tag to its folder/file name.
  5. Verify the edition label and related assets before reorganising more titles.

Edition metadata describes the intended cut; confirm the file content and duration separately.

When to stop or ask for help

If the field is unavailable, check installed server/agent and current official feature requirements before renaming an established library.
