Applies to: Plex Web Get Info; owner XML access where available
The useful distinctions
- Get Info is available from item details or its additional-actions menu.
- The window includes media path and overall properties.
- Video, audio and subtitle stream details can be inspected.
- An XML link can expose more item information for authorised owners.
Begin with the exact file
A library item can have several versions or parts, so the poster tile alone may not identify the file involved. Confirm the path before copying codec details into a report. Write down which version was selected in the observed session. This prevents a technically accurate report about one encode from being used to explain a problem that occurred with another encode of the same film.
Describe the format as a set
A filename extension is only one part of the media description. Record video, sound and subtitle properties separately, along with the container. The evidence card leaves values to be filled from the actual item rather than suggesting a combination that has not been observed. Include track language and channel information when those details affect the question being investigated.
Use extra detail purposefully
The XML view can be useful when support needs information beyond the visible window, but it can also reveal paths or identifiers irrelevant to a public report. Review it before sharing and retain the original privately. If another inspection tool reports a different value, record that difference rather than silently replacing Plex’s analysis. The server’s stored information is part of understanding its own decisions, even when further file investigation is warranted.
A focused way to proceed
- Open the item’s details and choose Get Info.
- Confirm the path refers to the intended local file.
- Record container, video codec, audio tracks and subtitle formats.
- Use XML only if necessary and review sensitive information before sharing.

Get Info reports the server’s analysed media properties; it is not a playback test or a complete device-capability statement.
When to stop or ask for help
For suspected stale analysis, compare the actual file with the stored data and use the official Analyze workflow selectively.
