The useful distinctions
- Account settings govern track selection for that signed-in account.
- Automatic selection must be enabled for its dependent settings.
- Known track language metadata is needed for language matching.
- A manual per-item choice overrides subsequent automatic selection.
Write a human viewing policy
Decide what should happen in a few concrete situations: familiar-language audio, unfamiliar-language audio and a recording with no preferred-language track. This is clearer than changing a subtitle mode because its label sounds convenient. Use the account that will actually watch the collection. A server administrator’s preference does not automatically describe every other viewer’s personal language choice.
Choose a clean test item
An item that was manually switched earlier is a poor test of the automatic policy because that choice has priority. Select a representative item without a prior manual override and note its available language labels. The synthetic test plan uses known English and Urdu tracks rather than assuming the first stream is always the desired one. A track marked unknown cannot support the same language comparison.
Explain exceptions without guessing
If the selected result differs from the policy, inspect the available tracks and any item-specific choice before changing several global controls. Keep a short table of expected and observed selections during the test. This makes the distinction between missing language metadata, unavailable preferred content and a remembered manual decision visible. Do not relabel a track to a false language merely to influence automatic selection.
A focused way to proceed
- Open the user menu, Account Settings and Audio & Subtitle Settings.
- Enable automatic selection if that is the desired policy.
- Set preferred audio/subtitle languages and the intended subtitle mode.
- Test with a multi-track item that has not already been manually overridden.
- Inspect track language metadata when the chosen default differs from expectations.
Worked example · synthetic
Account preference: Urdu audio, English subtitles
Test item: known ur and en audio tracks; known en subtitle
Condition: no prior manual track selection
Record: expected selection, actual selection, track labelsRead the comparison
Automatic selection chooses among available correctly labelled tracks; it does not translate audio or create subtitles.
When to stop or ask for help
If results remain inconsistent on a clean test item, report account policy, track labels and client/server versions.
