Applies to: An externally connected Apple TV HD/4K or Google streaming device; a TV with an input/status display.

The useful distinctions

  • Apple identifies input selection and HDMI connections as black-screen checks.
  • Google separates HDMI and explicit HDCP black-screen cases.
  • Diagnostic inference to test: A visible player overlay is evidence that some picture rendering still reaches the display.

Read the screen in layers

Start with the TV’s own menu, then the external player’s menu, then the video rectangle. These are different observations. A TV menu that appears over a black input establishes that the panel can draw that menu at that moment. It does not establish that the external video path is healthy. Write down the exact words of a missing-signal or protection message.

Make the distinction useful

If the player controls remain visible while only the programme area is black, preserve that detail in the report. If the television instead announces that the physical input has no signal and the player menu also disappears, investigate the connection path. Neither observation alone names a failed component. The purpose is to choose the next boundary test without erasing the original symptom.

Keep the evidence comparable

Use the same input and item for both observations. A dark scene is a poor reference because black may be the intended image. A known bright menu or permitted reference clip is easier to describe. Avoid resetting picture controls during this classification; that adds a separate variable and can make the initial event difficult to reproduce.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Keep the player connected and record the TV input name and any exact warning.
  2. Call up a supported player menu or playback overlay once.
  3. Compare the TV’s own menu with the player overlay.
  4. Replay the same item and note whether the input status changes at failure.

Worked example · synthetic

Hypothetical example: a title shows black, but its pause bar remains visible and the TV still identifies HDMI 2. The report becomes “black programme area with working overlay”, leading to an item/player comparison before cable replacement.

When to stop or ask for help

Escalate with input status, overlay visibility and exact error text. This observation cannot prove stream availability, a hardware defect or a protection failure.
