Applies to: Windows 11 display path on which Night light is available; compare an owned neutral reference under stable room lighting.
The useful distinctions
- Windows Night light makes display colours warmer.
- Night light can follow a schedule.
- Certain display drivers do not support the feature.
Use the clock as evidence
If the cast appears at a regular evening time, include that timing in the report before changing player settings. A scheduled system colour feature provides a plausible comparison, but its actual state must be checked. Keep room lighting fixed during the brief test because a changing lamp or sunset can alter perception of a neutral reference.
Keep the reference unchanged
Use the same file, application and display. Compare only the supported feature state and restore it afterward. If both neutral desktop material and the video change together, that supports a shared system-level contribution. If the video alone changes, preserve the difference for an app-specific check. A camera image may apply its own white balance and should not replace direct observation.
Separate comfort from calibration
The user may prefer the warmer state for comfortable viewing. That preference is distinct from establishing an accurate reference white. The test is useful because it can explain a repeatable cast without editing media or guessing a provider problem. If the feature is unavailable on the current driver, record the limit and investigate other documented colour handling rather than inventing an equivalent toggle.
A focused way to proceed
- Record whether Night light is available, active and scheduled.
- Display the same owned neutral reference and video window.
- Compare a supported temporary off state under the same lighting.
- Restore the original state and observe whether the warm cast returns.
- Record which screen and applications are affected.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: an evening warm cast appears in a neutral desktop reference and video together, disappears when the supported feature is temporarily off, and returns on restoration. The user keeps the preferred comfort setting and records its effect on colour comparisons.
When to stop or ask for help
This check does not measure eye health or colour accuracy. Driver support varies; use the actual feature state on the affected display.
