Applies to: Mac apps following the documented macOS window and app model
The useful distinctions
- Closing a Mac window can leave its app open.
- An app menu Quit command or Command-Q quits the app.
- A Dock running indicator and a pinned icon represent different states.
Choose the state you want
A window is one view into an application. On Mac, closing that view does not necessarily end the app. Apple documents a separate Quit command for that purpose. Decide whether you want to clear the screen, close a document or stop the application before choosing an action. Those goals can require different commands even when the same red window control is visible.
Read the Dock carefully
A favourite app can remain in the Dock after quitting because its shortcut is pinned there. A running-state indication answers a different question from whether the icon exists. Look for the relevant state instead of repeatedly removing and restoring a shortcut. This also avoids calling an app uninstalled merely because a window disappeared or an icon moved.
Use quitting for a deliberate fresh start
When troubleshooting requires a normal application restart, save work, quit the app and then reopen it. Note whether it launches normally and which task causes the next failure. Closing one window alone may not supply that comparison. If the app ignores a normal Quit, use the separate documented unresponsive-app procedure rather than assuming the close button has already ended it.
A focused way to proceed
- Save any work in the relevant app.
- Close one ordinary window and inspect whether the app remains open.
- Use the app’s Quit command when ending the application is the goal.
- Check the running state before reopening it.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: a viewer closes the player window and sees its icon still in the Dock. That observation could reflect a pinned shortcut, a running app or both. Inspecting the state and using Quit gives a clearer restart record than deleting the Dock icon.
When to stop or ask for help
Use the application’s own guide for special background behaviour. Escalate an ignored Quit through the documented Force Quit workflow, keeping unsaved work in mind.
