Applies to: Mac applications obtained from the App Store or an identifiable developer
The useful distinctions
- App Store apps have an App Store update route.
- Other apps may update through their developer.
- Deleting an app can discard locally stored data.
Start with the installed identity
A Mac can contain applications from different distribution channels. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes App Store updates from updates supplied by an app developer. Confirm the application’s name and source before downloading anything. A search result that has a similar icon is not enough to show that it is the same product or a valid replacement for an existing installation.
Keep the comparison controlled
Write down the action that originally failed, then use the appropriate update route and retest that action. This is more informative than changing the player, removing its settings and updating the system in one session. If you need to compare versions, use the version actually shown by the application or store rather than guessing from the download filename.
Separate maintenance from access
An app may open after maintenance while still requiring its own licence or service login. Conversely, an account can remain valid while the application fails to launch. Keep those observations separate. Before considering deletion and reinstallation, preserve information that the app does not keep elsewhere and check the publisher’s instructions; removing local software is not a reliable way to prove or change a remote subscription state.
A focused way to proceed
- Identify the app and where it was obtained.
- For a Store app, inspect App Store Updates.
- For another app, use the verified developer’s update guidance.
- Reopen the updated app and repeat the original task.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: a viewer installed a player from a developer website months earlier, but now searches the Mac App Store for an update. A different app with a similar name appears. The useful next step is confirming the original publisher’s route, not assuming the new listing is an upgrade.
When to stop or ask for help
Stop if the original developer cannot be identified or an updater requests an unexpected unrelated installation. Escalate repeatable launch failures with the app name, source and macOS version.
