Applies to: An HDMI player that offers two modes explicitly supported by every device in its chain.
The useful distinctions
- Apple exposes resolution, frame-rate and dynamic-range output choices.
- Apple provides a check of the current HDMI configuration.
- Diagnostic inference to test: A lower supported output comparison changes output demand and may change negotiation.
Name the output rather than the title
The source item and the player’s HDMI output are separate entries in the log. A television can receive a high-resolution output while the material inside it has a different origin. This comparison concerns the selected output mode. It does not measure the delivered stream, reveal its original resolution or establish that a service supplies a particular quality.
Avoid a bundle of hidden changes
Where possible change one output dimension at a time. If the device offers only preset combinations, record the complete before-and-after modes. A preset may alter refresh rate and dynamic range together. That still produces useful evidence, provided the conclusion stays at the preset level. Keep picture processing and network access unchanged during the short check.
Use stability as a clue
If only the higher mode fails, inspect the documented capabilities of every link before blaming content. If both modes fail similarly, a different output-path comparison may be more informative. The lower working mode can be a temporary practical option, but its success should not be promoted as a diagnosis of cable bandwidth, a broken decoder or a guaranteed long-term fix.
A focused way to proceed
- Write down the unstable output’s resolution, refresh rate and dynamic range.
- Choose one lower mode documented for the complete chain.
- Keep the same item, audio route and cables for a timed comparison.
- Restore the original mode and repeat the same section.
- Record whether failure follows the mode consistently.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: a documented 1080p SDR mode remains stable during a repeatable passage while the original supported 4K HDR preset loses signal. The report names both presets and keeps cable, source and route fixed; further checks investigate that mode-dependent path.
When to stop or ask for help
Use only documented selectable modes. Escalate with complete before/after output values; no numerical network throughput requirement follows from this test.
