Applies to: Kodi v21 and earlier use explicit enumeration; v22 adds documented ranges
The useful distinctions
- Kodi uses SxxEyy numbering to match episode metadata.
- Specials generally use season 00 according to the selected provider.
- v22 adds episode ranges; earlier versions require explicitly named included episodes.
Choose one ordering scheme
A filename can be perfectly consistent and still identify the wrong episode when the media was released in a different order from the scraper database. Write down whether the collection follows the provider’s normal order or an alternative release order before changing numbers. Compare the opening scene or your own catalogue notes with the intended episode, rather than assuming that a disc position is a season number.
Handle joined episodes deliberately
A single file containing episodes three and four should describe those two episodes explicitly when supporting older Kodi versions. The filename does not divide the recording into independently encoded files. It supplies library identities that point to one media object. Treat that distinction as part of the collection design: separate files are easier to replace individually, while a joined file may need episode bookmarks for convenient navigation.
Review exceptions together
Check a normal episode, a special and a joined episode in the pilot scan. That small set catches more numbering problems than repeatedly checking three ordinary episodes. Keep the original filenames in a rename manifest so you can undo a mistaken ordering decision. If several items display the wrong plots in a consistent sequence, investigate ordering before changing the scraper or deleting the library.
A focused way to proceed
- Confirm the episode ordering used by the active TV scraper.
- Give a single episode an unambiguous SxxEyy filename.
- For a joined file on v21 or earlier, enumerate each contained episode.
- Scan the show and inspect episode titles and linked file paths.

Multiple library episodes can point to one joined file; that does not mean the file was split.
