The useful distinctions

  • Skip steps defines the forward and backward jump sequence.
  • Rapid successive presses can select progressively larger steps.
  • Skip delay controls the multi-press window.
  • Choosing None performs the skip immediately and prevents multi-press selection.

Define the navigation task

A person reviewing short demonstrations needs different navigation from somebody moving through a two-hour recording. Decide whether the normal action should repeat a small jump or build toward a larger jump through several quick presses. Write that expectation down first. It becomes the pass condition for the control test and prevents tuning the remote based on an uncertain memory of the previous behavior.

Test timing and distance together

Step sizes determine where playback should go, while the delay determines how button presses are grouped. Changing only one can make the other feel unreliable. Use the same local recording and start position for each comparison. Compare the displayed target time after a single press, then repeat from the start position with a deliberate double press. This reveals whether presses are being grouped as intended.

Keep the simplest useful sequence

Choose a short progression that is easy to remember. A remote with slow repeat behavior may need a different delay from a keyboard, but that is a reason for a controlled test rather than an automatic maximum value. If immediate independent skips are the real requirement, the None choice expresses it clearly. Save a note of the resulting sequence so another user of the same installation understands what repeated presses will do.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Open Settings, Player, Videos at Standard level.
  2. Inspect Skip steps and choose a small useful sequence.
  3. Set Skip delay to a value that suits the remote response.
  4. Test one press and a quick double press on a local recording.
  5. Choose None only when immediate independent skips are the intended behavior.

Worked example · synthetic

Local file: demonstration-session.mkv
Reference position: 00:10:00
Check A: one forward press
Check B: two deliberate quick forward presses
Record: resulting times and chosen Skip delay

Read the comparison

A delayed jump can be intentional waiting for another press, not a playback stall.

When to stop or ask for help

If presses are lost independently of the delay setting, investigate the input device and its mapping rather than enlarging skip distances.
