Applies to: Documented Kodi subtitle workflow; example uses established ISO-language naming

The useful distinctions

  • Kodi supports embedded and external subtitle tracks.
  • External files can share the video basename with a language suffix.
  • The playback OSD can browse for a local subtitle file.
  • WebVTT support begins with Kodi v20; BCP47 filename tags are documented from v22.

Confirm that the text belongs to this cut

A subtitle can be technically valid and still describe a different edit of a recording. Before changing offsets, compare an early spoken line and a later one with the supplied text. A constant shift suggests a different problem from timing that gradually drifts. Keep that observation with the subtitle filename so later maintenance does not repeat the same comparison.

Separate discovery from choice

Matching names helps the player find candidates, but it does not remove the need to verify which candidate is selected. The example deliberately includes two language files so the selection step is visible. Use a language suffix supported by the installed version. Avoid adopting a newer filename-tag convention for a mixed-version household until every relevant player can interpret it.

Preserve a clear media bundle

Store the original subtitle file with the associated media and keep edits in a separate working copy until reviewed. A manual browse is a useful diagnostic because it distinguishes a naming or location problem from an unreadable file. Once the correct track displays, check a few scenes rather than concluding that an opening caption proves the whole subtitle matches. No external subtitle service is needed for this local workflow.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Place the authorised subtitle beside the matching video.
  2. Use the same basename and an appropriate language code.
  3. Open playback and select the desired track in the subtitle OSD.
  4. If discovery fails, use Browse for subtitle to select the file explicitly.

Read the comparison

Finding a subtitle file proves discovery; correct language and timing still need inspection of the selected track.

When to stop or ask for help

If manual browsing works but automatic discovery fails, compare basename, extension and installed-version naming support.
