The useful distinctions
- Audio output device selects the destination for decoded sound.
- Number of channels describes the connection or analogue speakers.
- The channel-count setting does not apply to passthrough audio.
- Fixed output configuration disables passthrough.
Draw the actual audio path
Write down the application, selected output, connection and final speakers. A television with two speakers is a different destination from a receiver feeding a surround layout, even if both are connected through HDMI. Configure the path that exists today. A larger channel number is not an improvement by itself and does not create additional speakers or expand the capacity of the connection.
Establish a decoded baseline
Use decoded audio as a clear baseline when determining which output Kodi is addressing. Keep the test volume comfortable and use files whose channel layouts are already known. Compare the same short passages after each meaningful change. The aim is to establish where sound is being sent and how the connection is described, not to judge every advanced audio feature in one session.
Treat passthrough as another decision
Passthrough delegates decoding to compatible equipment, so its configuration should follow verified capabilities of that equipment. Do not use the decoded channel-count field as evidence that a compressed format is supported by a receiver. Keep notes of the working baseline so a later passthrough experiment can be reversed. If available options differ from a screenshot, identify the selected backend and device before copying somebody else’s settings.
A focused way to proceed
- Open Settings, System, Audio and identify the actual output device.
- Set the decoded-audio channel count for the connection in use.
- Review Output configuration before enabling any passthrough options.
- Test an authorised stereo file and a known multichannel file at a comfortable level.
- Record the working decoded baseline before considering receiver-specific passthrough.
Worked example · synthetic
Example path: Kodi → selected HDMI output → two-speaker display
Decoded-audio baseline: 2.0 channels
Passthrough decision: separate, based on actual receiver/display supportRead the comparison
A correct PCM channel setting describes decoded output; it does not certify compressed-format passthrough.
When to stop or ask for help
For device-specific failures, provide selected backend, connection and equipment model to the relevant official support channel.
