The useful distinctions

  • User controls are managed under Dashboard Users and changes require Save.
  • Disabling all-library access permits individual library selection; new libraries are not automatically granted to those users.
  • Playback requiring transcoding and conversion without re-encoding have separate documented permissions.

Compare policy before codecs

When one account can play an item and another cannot, the difference is useful evidence. Start with the intended permissions for each account rather than copying all administrator settings to the affected user. The aim is to explain the observed behavior while keeping the access policy deliberate. A catalogue visibility restriction and a conversion restriction affect different stages of the experience.

Use one controlled comparison

Choose a single item you are entitled to administer and record which user can see it, which can start it and whether conversion is required. Do not infer that a permission checkbox guarantees a client can decode the original file. The example separates access from conversion so the review remains meaningful even if both users are on the same device and looking at the same catalogue entry.

Keep the approved policy clear

If limiting server conversion is intentional, a failed request may be the expected result of that policy. Document the intended tradeoff rather than quietly widening access during troubleshooting. If the user should be allowed to play the item, collect the actual playback mode and the saved permissions. This gives an administrator a focused next question instead of a broad complaint that the server works for some people.

A focused way to proceed

  1. In Dashboard Users, open the affected user.
  2. Review Library access and compare it with the intended catalogue access.
  3. Review the media-playback conversion permissions in Profile.
  4. Save the chosen policy and retry the same owned-media item with that user.

Worked example · synthetic

Workshop Viewer policy review:
Library visible: Workshop Films
Re-encoding allowed: record intended choice
Conversion without re-encoding allowed: record intended choice
Test item: Harbour Lantern (2024)

Read the comparison

An account-specific result can follow saved policy; it does not establish that the file itself is corrupt.

When to stop or ask for help

If policy and actual behavior disagree, supply the saved controls, client build and playback-mode evidence to the administrator.
