Start with visible focus
Keyboard navigation is easier to assess when you can see which item will receive an activation command. Apple’s Full Keyboard Access provides a focus highlight and documented default commands. Begin on an ordinary settings screen rather than a page with a destructive confirmation. This makes a movement mistake recoverable and gives you a clear reference for later app comparisons.
Distinguish navigation from typing
A connected keyboard can type into a field without automatically providing the same system navigation experience. Enable the intended feature, then try moving forward, moving backward and activating the selected item separately. Check the command list when the defaults do not match your keyboard. A customized assignment is not evidence that the application ignored the standard key.
Assess the target application afterwards
Once the system-level trial is clear, open the application and inspect its focus movement. Note whether a control becomes highlighted and whether activation produces a response. These are two useful observations, especially where an app has unusual custom controls. Do not promise that every third-party interface is fully accessible just because ordinary Settings navigation succeeds.

- Open Settings, Accessibility, Keyboards & Typing and Full Keyboard Access as shown on the device.
- Enable the feature and inspect the visible focus.
- Try Tab, Shift-Tab and Space on harmless controls.
- Use Commands to inspect any customized assignments.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: a keyboard types successfully in Search, but Tab does not yet move a visible highlight through system controls. After Full Keyboard Access is enabled, focus movement and activation can be tested independently. That supplies a better input diagnosis than reinstalling the player immediately.
When to stop or ask for help
Use the device’s current accessibility route when labels differ. Ask the app publisher about inaccessible custom controls after confirming ordinary system navigation with the same keyboard.
