The useful distinctions

  • Cache-Control contains cache directives.
  • no-cache permits storage but requires validation before reuse.
  • no-store prohibits storing the response in caches.

Ask three questions about the same response

For a changing manifest, first ask whether a cache may store the response. Next ask whether a stored response can be reused without contacting the origin. Finally ask what happens when its reuse conditions no longer hold. Keeping these questions separate prevents the common mistake of reading no-cache as a ban on storage. A developer writing a support note should record the actual policy string before translating it into a description of observed behavior.

Apply the policy to a concrete timeline

Consider an invented manifest that is saved locally at noon. With the policy in the example, keeping that local copy and validating it before reuse are compatible actions. That offers a different workflow from forbidding storage altogether. It still does not prove the origin's data is up to date, because HTTP reuse rules cannot correct an incorrectly published manifest. In an implementation review, describe the policy decision and the content publication decision separately. Avoid adding several familiar directives just to make a header look stricter; the resulting text should express the intended storage and reuse contract clearly enough for another developer to evaluate. A review note for the example can say stored, validation required, and content currency unverified. Those three entries are more actionable than an unexplained cached yes-or-no value in a support worksheet.

Worked example · synthetic

This policy allows a cache to retain the synthetic response, but reuse requires validation. Replacing no-cache with no-store would change the storage decision, not merely shorten a timer.

Check the interpretation

  • Distinguish storage permission from reuse permission.
  • Inspect request and response policies separately.
  • Do not claim no-cache deletes already stored copies.
