The useful distinctions

  • 404 does not establish whether absence is temporary or permanent.
  • 410 communicates that unavailability is likely permanent.
  • The returned error representation is separate from the missing resource.

Keep lifetime meaning precise

A missing segment observation is evidence about a request at a particular time. It does not prove the media format is unsupported, and it does not reveal whether a publisher will restore the resource later. The distinction between 404 and 410 helps describe what the server is communicating about availability. In the synthetic example, the response explicitly chooses the gone branch for a retired resource.

Investigate the reference that led there

A practical technical note should identify which parent document supplied the missing path, the parent's version or collection time, and the status returned for the child. That connection matters because a stale parent can legitimately outlive a referenced child under an unsuitable retention policy. Equally, a publisher can accidentally list a child before publication. The status alone cannot choose between those explanations. Preserve the referencing relationship and the observations rather than changing a filename until something responds. If a corrected parent later removes the path, record that as a new observation, leaving the earlier evidence intact for the responsible publishing workflow to examine. For a content-inventory audit, preserve when each status was observed. A later corrected URL or republished resource is a new observation and should not rewrite the historical result for the original target.

Worked example · synthetic

The seven-byte body explains this synthetic response. It is an error representation about the absent object, not seven bytes recovered from that object.

Synthetic text example; no network operation has been performed.

HTTP/MIME line endings are CRLF. Request URL context, where labelled, is commentary rather than a wire field. No message was transmitted.

Check the interpretation

  • Record the parent reference and its version.
  • Do not infer codec support from a missing object.
  • Verify any later recovery as a new observation.
