The useful distinctions
- 303 directs retrieval of a different resource.
- 307 preserves the method when automatically redirected.
- 308 preserves the method and communicates a permanent redirect.
Describe the intended next operation
A redirect can mean retrieve a result page or repeat an operation at another address. Those are different intentions even if both display as an arrow in a network panel. For a synthetic metadata-processing job, a completed submission may point to a separate result resource. The example uses 303 to communicate that transition. It should not be read as an instruction to submit the same body to the result path.
Review method and target together
A compact decision table can compare the three cases: a 303 result retrieval, a 307 temporary relocation of the same operation, and a 308 permanent relocation of that operation. That table is more useful than a status-code glossary because it exposes whether the original body would be sent again. In a real client review, include the original method and the authorized destination in every redirect test case. Automatic replay can have consequences for methods that change state. The synthetic response contains no job content or identity data and makes no request; it exists to make the method decision reviewable before an implementation is evaluated. For a job submission review, retain the initial method, redirect status, and next method as three fields. The status comparison then explains the workflow transition without relying on a browser's abbreviated network display.
Worked example · synthetic
For a hypothetical POST submission, this 303 points to a result retrieval. Replacing it with 307 or 308 would express method preservation instead, with temporary versus permanent relocation meaning.

Check the interpretation
- Record the initiating method.
- Check whether the next operation retrieves or repeats.
- Review the target before replaying any state-changing request.
