The useful distinctions

  • EXT-X-PART identifies a partial segment.
  • EXT-X-PART-INF declares a partial target duration.
  • EXT-X-PRELOAD-HINT can anticipate a future resource.

Separate committed entries from a hint

A partial-segment list and a preload hint do not have the same evidential weight. In the excerpt, two parts are explicitly listed with durations, while the following URI is a hint about an anticipated part. A resource inventory should keep those categories separate. Otherwise, a tool may incorrectly report a missing segment merely because an anticipated object was not ultimately published in that form.

Avoid deriving latency from tag presence

The two visible durations add to one second of described partial media. They do not establish end-to-end delay, server response timing, network performance, or a player's operating distance from the live edge. Those require a complete delivery context and measurements. Likewise, the independence flag on the first part is a declaration that needs actual samples to verify. This excerpt is intentionally scoped to the partial-resource relationship and omits the enclosing playlist's full server-control contract. A complete authoring review must use the applicable current HLS specification and server profile, rather than treating this short syntax reference as a complete low-latency deployment recipe. In an availability ledger, mark the two listed parts as declared entries and the hinted part as anticipated. That distinction remains useful even before any media request or server behavior has been observed.

Worked example · synthetic

These are valid media-playlist tag lines in context. Two parts are listed; the third reference is a hint. This excerpt is not a complete standalone low-latency playlist.

Valid HLS media-playlist excerpt; enclosing playlist and delivery profile intentionally omitted.

Check the interpretation

  • Classify listed parts and hints separately.
  • Verify independence against actual media.
  • Review complete server-control requirements before deployment.
