Applies to: Protocol and format interpretation for developers inspecting authorized media delivery.

The useful distinctions

  • EXT-X-KEY carries an encryption-method declaration.
  • METHOD=NONE declares unencrypted media segments.
  • Other EXT-X-KEY attributes are not permitted with METHOD=NONE.

Read the scope before looking for a key

A key-related tag does not necessarily name a key resource. The synthetic example explicitly selects NONE, so there is no key URI to interpret or retrieve. Its purpose is to make a clear-media declaration visible at this position in the playlist. The later media reference is still a media reference; the tag does not transform its content or prove that its bytes actually match the declaration.

Validate the publisher's declaration independently

For an authorized authoring review, compare the signalled state with the actual packaging state of the referenced media. If they disagree, preserve that mismatch for correction in the publishing workflow. Removing a key tag or changing its method text cannot decrypt already encrypted data, create an entitlement, or repair an inaccessible protected resource. The example deliberately contains no encryption key, usable stream, or instruction for bypassing protection. It is a syntax and scope exercise. A fuller publication with changing protection states would also need its container and transition rules checked, rather than treating one clear-state line as a complete description of every earlier or later resource. For the small fixture, keep the method declaration beside the following segment reference in an inspection table. This shows the intended scope directly without introducing a nonexistent key location into the record.

Worked example · synthetic

METHOD=NONE stands alone, with no URI, IV, or key-format attributes. The referenced clear.ts is fictional; its declared encryption state has not been compared with media bytes.

Synthetic text example; no network operation has been performed.

Check the interpretation

  • Do not add other attributes to METHOD=NONE.
  • Check signalling against authorized media packaging.
  • Do not treat a playlist edit as decryption.
