The useful distinctions

  • EVENT identifies an append-only playlist.
  • Earlier playlist content is retained as new segments are appended.
  • An event can end by adding ENDLIST.

Compare the retained prefix

An event playlist is useful to reason about as a growing record. In the invented example, a later publication could have appended the second segment and the final marker after first publishing the initial segment. A review of those two snapshots should compare the earlier prefix directly. The question is not simply whether the latest file parses; it is whether the publisher respected the mutability contract across updates.

Keep publication type and retention aligned

A complete-looking event list can still refer to resources that are no longer retained. That is a separate publishing defect from deleting lines in an append-only playlist. A useful validation note therefore has one result for snapshot evolution and another for referenced-object availability. If the intended product is a moving window, selecting EVENT and later removing old references creates a contradiction rather than converting the event into that window. Decide the publication model before producing updates. The synthetic example contains only two resources so that the retained-prefix idea is visible, not because real events require that duration or segment count. No media objects have been fetched or timed. For a before-and-after editorial fixture, compare the ordered prefix of entries. Replacing an early entry while retaining the EVENT label should be treated as a publication-contract discrepancy for review, not ordinary appending.

Worked example · synthetic

This is an ended event playlist. Its declared duration is 9.5 seconds. A prior publication containing only opening.ts could grow into this form by appending the remaining lines.

Check the interpretation

  • Compare earlier content as a retained prefix.
  • Check referenced-object retention separately.
  • Do not remove old entries while declaring EVENT.
