Applies to: Windows 11 PC with multiple displays and an HDR-capable playback screen; exact display identity is known.
The useful distinctions
- Microsoft requires selecting the intended display for HDR adjustments.
- Windows display settings identify connected screens.
- Diagnostic inference to test: An unchanged playback screen can result from adjusting a different display.
Name the physical screen
Use a clear description such as the external monitor on the left and connect it to the operating system’s display identity. Do not rely on a remembered number after reconnecting equipment. Place the playback and settings windows so you can confirm the target without moving the video between displays during the comparison.
Make a small reversible check
The purpose is to establish that the selected control affects the intended screen, not to calibrate it by eye. Record the original value before changing it. If the expected screen does not respond, stop and verify target, control applicability and app behaviour. A control’s presence in a settings window is not evidence that every connected monitor uses that control.
Use target certainty in later reports
Once the correct target is confirmed, proceed with a known SDR or HDR reference appropriate to that screen. Keep each display’s state separate in the log. This avoids contradictory notes such as “HDR enabled” when the enabled display was never used for playback. It also narrows future comparisons when only one screen shows a symptom and the other remains a useful reference.
A focused way to proceed
- Identify the screen carrying the playback window.
- Record that screen’s identity and current HDR state.
- Inspect the selected target before any display adjustment.
- Make one reversible supported adjustment on the intended screen.
- Restore the value and confirm whether the correct screen responds.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: the user discovers that a brightness-balance change affected the laptop panel while the video was on an external HDR monitor. Selecting the actual playback screen produces a visible controlled response; no content or cable change was needed to explain the failed first adjustment.
When to stop or ask for help
Display identity can change after reconnection. Confirm actual target and applicability; this check does not certify the selected screen’s colour accuracy.
