Applies to: Google TV and a compatible Bluetooth input accessory

The useful distinctions

  • Pairing is under Remote & Accessories.
  • The accessory must be in pairing mode.
  • An existing pairing can be forgotten separately.

Prepare both ends

Google TV searches for nearby Bluetooth accessories, but discovery starts with the accessory itself. Use its manufacturer instructions to make it visible. A controller that is merely powered on may still be connected elsewhere or may not be advertising a new pairing. Keep its model name available so that a nearby device with a similar label is not selected by accident.

Test an input action you actually need

A paired accessory should be checked against the intended job. For television navigation, that may mean moving focus, selecting a tile and returning to the previous screen. These are more useful observations than a connection label alone. An application can interpret controller input differently from the launcher, so keep those two tests separate rather than promising that pairing makes every app fully controllable.

Avoid a loop of unnecessary re-pairing

When an already known accessory loses its connection, first note whether it is listed in the accessory settings. Forgetting it creates a different state and may require its pairing procedure again. Change one state deliberately, then test. If you cannot distinguish the device entry or the controller remains attached to another host, resolve that ambiguity before deleting several saved pairings.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Put the accessory into its documented pairing mode.
  2. Open Settings and Remote & Accessories.
  3. Choose Pair remote or accessory.
  4. Select the correct device and confirm Pair.

Worked example · synthetic

Hypothetical comparison: a controller appears in the TV list and operates the launcher, yet a particular app ignores its buttons. That result points to an app-input question. If the controller never appears in discovery, the investigation remains at the accessory visibility and pairing stage.

When to stop or ask for help

Ask the accessory manufacturer about its supported television modes when discovery repeatedly fails. Report launcher control and app control as separate results; do not infer player compatibility from a Bluetooth label.
