Applies to: Apple TV with Match Dynamic Range or Match Frame Rate enabled and a display that changes output formats.

The useful distinctions

  • Apple documents blanking or flicker while the TV switches formats.
  • Dynamic-range and frame-rate matching are independently selectable.
  • Apple matches supported content frame rates rather than every possible rate.

Use event timing

Mark each blanking event against an action: start, stop, seek, item change or uninterrupted playback. This small log makes a large difference. A repeatable boundary event is a different report from random loss half-way through a scene. Do not judge severity solely by how startling the screen looks; record whether it recovers and what the TV reports afterward.

Run one focused comparison

The fixed-output comparison asks whether removing format changes removes the boundary blanking. It does not establish that fixed output is the preferred way to watch all material. Keep the clip and connections unchanged. If both dynamic-range and frame-rate matching are enabled, test their contribution separately only when the equipment offers that distinction and the original settings are recorded.

Set a sensible limit

The manufacturer’s explanation of transition blanking does not cover an indefinitely black screen or every mid-program dropout. Those outcomes need their own path investigation. Report recovery, frequency and event timing together. A short phone note is sufficient; there is no need to collect private account information or film an entire programme to explain the transition.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Record whether either content-matching option is enabled.
  2. Start and stop one known item three times, noting when blanking happens.
  3. Watch an uninterrupted section and note any mid-play losses.
  4. Temporarily compare a fixed supported output mode, then restore the original preference.

Worked example · synthetic

Hypothetical example: the screen blanks on every start and stop, returns to normal, and stays stable throughout playback. With a fixed supported mode, those boundary events disappear. The observation supports investigating format switching, while preserving matching as a viewing preference.

When to stop or ask for help

For persistent or mid-play loss, use the separate signal-path checks. No universal acceptable blackout duration is asserted.
