The useful distinctions
- ffplay ast selects an audio stream by specifier.
- Its default automatic audio choice may differ from an intended editorial track.
- autoexit closes the player when playback finishes.
Name the comparison target
A multitrack recording can contain a clean microphone, a room recording and commentary. Write down which one should accompany the picture before opening the file. This gives the listening task a stable target. If automatic selection chooses a different track, the recording can appear wrong even though the desired material is present and correctly encoded elsewhere in the same container.
Select and observe consistently
The synthetic example chooses the second audio stream by audio-type position. Confirm that position against your own inventory before using the command. Play a known passage with an identifiable sound, then repeat the observation for the other intended track if needed. Keep volume and the passage consistent enough that the comparison answers a track-identity question rather than an accidental change in listening conditions.
Keep the conclusion attached to the track
A successful check means that the explicitly selected track behaved as observed in this player and session. It does not prove that another application will choose the same default or that every device supports the format. Record the tool version and track choice alongside the observation. If the intended audio is absent, revisit the stream inventory before changing playback synchronization or rewriting the container based on an unverified assumption.
A focused way to proceed
- Inspect the source to identify its audio type positions.
- Launch ffplay with the desired audio stream specifier.
- Observe the same known passage for each intended track.
- Record the selected track and result rather than labeling the whole file from one automatic playback.

ffplay -ast a:1 -autoexit workshop-multitrack.mkvRead the comparison
A different automatically chosen track is a selection difference, not proof that the intended recording is missing.
