The useful distinctions
- thumbnail selects a representative frame within each batch.
- Its n value controls batch size.
- Larger batches consume more memory.
Choose an editorial purpose
A poster needs to help someone recognize the work. Before extraction, decide whether the useful image should show the main object, a person or a distinctive scene. A representative-frame algorithm can supply a candidate, but it cannot know the full editorial purpose. Keep that distinction clear when evaluating whether an automatically chosen frame is suitable for a catalogue or a project review.
Bound the first experiment
The synthetic command uses a modest batch and requests one image, keeping the initial extraction easy to inspect. It does not claim to search every frame for the single best artistic choice. Start with this bounded task instead of increasing the batch dramatically and assuming a more expensive selection will necessarily produce a better result. Preserve the chosen command with the candidate so its origin is understandable later.
Review the image itself
Inspect whether the subject is visible, the frame is free of an awkward transition and the composition leaves useful space for the intended presentation. A technically valid image can still be an unhelpful poster. If another passage matters more, choose a different source excerpt deliberately rather than treating the first algorithmic selection as authoritative. Keep original artwork ownership and the derivative’s intended use clear in your project notes.
A focused way to proceed
- Choose a local video you are entitled to use for artwork.
- Set a modest thumbnail batch and a new image filename.
- Limit image output to one frame.
- Inspect the extracted image and choose whether its composition suits the intended poster.
Worked example · synthetic
ffmpeg -i workshop-demo.mp4 -vf thumbnail=60 -frames:v 1 workshop-poster.pngRead the comparison
The selected frame is a candidate from a batch, not a guarantee of the best poster across the entire work.
When to stop or ask for help
If extraction fails, check filter availability and the decoder error before increasing batch size.
