The useful distinctions

  • The Network panel’s Throttling menu offers connection presets.
  • A warning indicates that throttling is active.
  • No throttling restores the ordinary setting.

Define startup as an event

Before comparing loading behavior, decide what the end point means: a visible play control, the first changing picture or an acknowledged user action. Use the same definition for both observations. Otherwise, one person may time the page shell while another times the actual demonstration, producing numbers that look comparable but describe different parts of the experience.

Keep the condition written down

The synthetic worksheet records a named preset rather than inventing a measured speed. Use the actual label from your installed browser and preserve the same page build and action sequence. Note whether the comparison uses cached material, because repeat visits can differ from the first load. A browser preset is a controlled experiment you chose, not a certification that the result represents every connection with a similar marketing label.

Inspect feedback as well as delay

While waiting, observe whether the player explains its state and gives the user a useful next action. A longer startup can be tolerable with clear progress but confusing with an unchanging blank area. Restore the normal condition and repeat the baseline before attributing a lingering delay to the application. Keep the small comparison report with the product issue so a developer can repeat the same condition without guessing which throttling option was active.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Record a baseline startup on the authorized test page.
  2. Select one Throttling preset in the Network panel.
  3. Repeat the same page load and playback-start action.
  4. Record the selected preset and return to No throttling before the final baseline.

Worked example · synthetic

Page: https://example.test/player
Action: reload, then press Play once
Startup endpoint: first changing video picture
Condition A: No throttling
Condition B: record actual chosen preset
Condition C: No throttling again

Read the comparison

The result describes a selected browser simulation and page build, not a universal real-world bandwidth guarantee.
