Applies to: A service name is displayed with different capitalisation from a saved or supplied identifier.
The useful distinctions
- A display label and an identifier are distinct fields.
- A source can choose different presentation casing.
- Player matching behaviour must not be assumed from appearance alone.
Do not copy typography into identity data
A service name may be restyled in capitals, title case or lower case without implying that every associated reference should be rewritten to match. An opaque reference has the meaning supplied by its source context, not the typography of the interface. Keep the approved value intact until the source owner confirms a change. This is a preservation rule for evidence, not a claim that every application treats case identically.
Use the actual programme result as the next check
If the programme sequence remains correct, a casing difference in the display label may be purely presentational. If the sequence is wrong, preserve that dated evidence and ask about the identity rather than guessing a character transformation. Changing several attributes at once can make the original cause harder to identify. The viewer’s report should say which field changed and what happened, keeping a cosmetic label separate from the value used for the source association.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional interface displays “HARBOR NEWS”, while the approved neutral reference remains `Harbor.News.Example`. On 8 November 2026, the service’s programme sequence is still correct. Rewriting the reference to match the all-capital label would introduce an unconfirmed edit. The viewer records the presentation difference and keeps the original reference, without claiming that case never matters or always matters in every player’s matching behaviour.
A focused way to proceed
- Retain the approved reference exactly as supplied.
- Record the cosmetic display change separately.
- Investigate programme evidence before altering reference characters.
When to stop or ask for help
Keep the approved reference and ask the source owner before applying a cosmetic casing change to it.
