Applies to: Apple TV HD/4K connected through an HDMI switch or AV receiver; a supported direct TV connection is available.
The useful distinctions
- Apple recommends a direct-to-TV comparison when a switch or receiver is present.
- Apple directs users to the intermediary manufacturer when bypass resolves the issue.
- Diagnostic inference to test: A bypass changes a chain segment; it does not identify one failed chip or cable.
Choose a fair bypass
The useful comparison keeps the source, display and passage fixed. A direct connection that also changes resolution, HDR mode and cable cannot isolate the receiver alone. Record the settings the direct route actually negotiates. If both routes support a common mode, start there before comparing their higher capabilities. This keeps a visible success from being overinterpreted.
Interpret the result as a segment
When the direct route works repeatedly and the original route fails repeatedly, the intermediary segment deserves attention. That segment includes its input, output, settings and the additional cable. It remains possible that one end negotiates differently through it. A single successful attempt is useful evidence but weaker than a short sequence that returns to the original configuration.
Preserve the original requirement
The working direct route may lose a feature you need, such as an audio arrangement. Treat it as a diagnostic route while you check the exact receiver model’s supported pass-through modes. The result should guide a manufacturer question with concrete connection details. It should not become a claim that every receiver, splitter or soundbar has the same limitation.
A focused way to proceed
- Photograph or sketch the original source–receiver–TV connections.
- Replay one known failing passage and record the output mode.
- Using a supported cable, connect the same player directly to the same TV.
- Repeat the passage at a common supported output mode.
- Restore the original route and check whether the symptom returns.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical example: the same scene blanks through a switch at the recorded mode, remains visible directly, and blanks again after restoration. The next investigation covers that switch segment and its two links; the example does not prove the switch itself is broken.
When to stop or ask for help
Provide the intermediary manufacturer with model numbers, mode and A/B result. Do not buy replacement equipment solely from one bypass outcome.
