Applies to: Windows 11 laptop with selectable refresh rates; keep its HDR and brightness policies separately recorded.

The useful distinctions

  • Windows offers refresh rates according to display support.
  • Windows 11 DRR can change refresh rate with activity on supported hardware.
  • Selecting some rates can also change resolution.

Record power as a condition

A laptop can behave differently when unplugged, so include power state in any motion report. Check what the display reports rather than assuming a battery policy is active. Keep other automatic settings visible in the notes, especially if a power change also alters HDR or brightness. Those are separate variables that can change how the same scene looks.

Keep the reference independent of delivery

Use the same permitted local sample for this short check so an online delivery change does not dominate it. Compare at the same output resolution and rate when the hardware allows it. If a selected rate changes resolution too, describe the complete mode. The result then applies to that combined mode, not to refresh rate in isolation.

Treat a match as evidence rather than certainty

If the motion difference disappears when both power states use the same fixed supported mode, investigate the device’s documented display or power policy. If it remains, preserve the result and consider a different boundary. This observation cannot measure processor throttling or identify a thermal cause. A change that happens on battery should not automatically be reported as a network fault.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Record actual resolution and refresh rate while connected to approved power.
  2. Play one permitted local motion reference.
  3. Compare battery operation while recording the actual display values again.
  4. Where supported, compare the same fixed rate in both power states.
  5. Restore the preferred power and display policy.

Worked example · synthetic

Hypothetical example: the laptop reports different active refresh values before and after unplugging; using a shared supported fixed rate makes the local pan look alike. The user investigates the documented display policy instead of assuming the streaming source changed.

When to stop or ask for help

DRR requires compatible hardware. Do not disable essential power protections or assume every laptop changes refresh on battery.
