Applies to: Apple TV connected through a switch/receiver to the TV, with a supported direct-TV route available.

The useful distinctions

  • Apple includes direct-TV connection in its no-sound checks.
  • Apple also includes supported audio-format comparisons.
  • Apple recommends checking receiver audio-processing controls.

Keep the bypass question narrow

This test removes the receiver or switch from the player-to-display path. It also changes the receiving audio equipment, so success does not identify one internal receiver fault. Record the original route and selected inputs first. A receiver on the wrong input and a format mismatch require different follow-ups even if both produce silence.

Use an audible reference

Choose a passage whose soundtrack is known to contain sound rather than an apparently silent opening. Keep volume comfortable and check the destination actually selected. Menu clicks can be configured independently, so they are not a complete substitute for the original item. Note the direct route’s selected format because the source may change it after negotiating with the TV.

Choose the next owner from the evidence

If sound returns directly and silence recurs through the original route, review the intermediary’s documented input, output and supported formats. If both routes remain silent, use a source-format or item comparison next. Avoid a blanket receiver replacement conclusion. The useful report preserves route, format and sound result together, giving the manufacturer a bounded condition to reproduce.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Record the silent route and the receiver’s selected input/output.
  2. Play one reference that normally has audible sound.
  3. Compare the same player directly to the TV using TV speakers.
  4. Record the newly selected audio format as well as sound availability.
  5. Restore the original route and check whether silence returns.

Worked example · synthetic

Hypothetical example: the same passage is audible directly through TV speakers but silent through the receiver route; the direct connection also selects stereo. The user reports both changes, so a format-compatibility check remains necessary before blaming hardware.

When to stop or ask for help

The bypass changes destination and may change format. It cannot alone distinguish receiver settings, cable behaviour and unsupported format handling.
