Applies to: Apple TV 4K with the silver remote described by Apple
The useful distinctions
- Apple documents Click and Touch and Click Only for the silver remote.
- Touch Surface Tracking speed is a separate preference.
- Availability depends on the actual remote and hardware.
Describe the movement problem
Accidentally swiping past a tile is different from a remote that never moves the highlight. Apple provides an interaction-mode preference for the silver remote’s clickpad. Inspect the hardware and the behaviour before changing settings. An older touch-surface remote or a third-party controller should not be assumed to expose the same switch.
Choose one preference to compare
Use Click Only when the intended comparison is whether touch tracking is causing unwanted movement. If the issue is the distance travelled by deliberate swipes, the tracking-speed preference answers a different question. Changing both controls together makes it harder to say which adjustment helped. Note the starting value so that an unsatisfactory preference can be reversed cleanly.
Judge selection rather than speed alone
Choose a few neighbouring Home items and repeat the same deliberate actions. The goal is predictable focus movement and selection, not the fastest possible navigation. If the system behaves normally but one application still ignores a selection, keep that result separate. A clickpad preference cannot by itself establish whether the app has stalled, how it handles gestures or whether an account is active.
A focused way to proceed
- Identify the silver remote and open Settings.
- Open Remotes and Devices.
- Inspect Clickpad and note its existing mode.
- Choose the intended mode and test one ordinary Home navigation task.
Worked example · synthetic
Hypothetical comparison: a viewer often brushes the clickpad while pressing it and jumps beyond the intended tile. In Click Only the same deliberate directional clicks select the tile reliably. That supports a preference choice, without proving that the remote was faulty or needed to be paired again.
When to stop or ask for help
Use the actual remote’s Apple guide if Clickpad is absent. Seek hardware or app-specific help when deliberate input fails across the system or only inside one application.
