Applies to: Apple TV and an accessory supported by its manufacturer

The useful distinctions

  • Apple TV has a Bluetooth accessory discovery page.
  • Accessories need their own pairing mode.
  • Forgetting an accessory is a separate saved-device action.

Prepare the accessory deliberately

Apple TV can discover an accessory through its Bluetooth settings, but the accessory must first be ready to pair. Use the instructions for that exact product. A keyboard or controller that remains connected to another device can create confusing observations: it may appear active to the viewer while never becoming available to the television’s new-pairing screen.

Check the intended interaction

After pairing, try the operation for which you needed the accessory. For text entry, examine a normal input field; for navigation, test focus movement and selection. Treat that as a functional check rather than relying solely on a device label. The launcher, a store screen and a third-party player can expose different controls, so success in one place should not be advertised as universal input support.

Record before forgetting

If a previously paired accessory becomes unreliable, note whether it remains listed and whether the same accessory works on its other intended host. Forgetting it on Apple TV removes the saved relationship and means the next attempt starts as a new pairing. Keep those stages distinct so that support can tell whether discovery failed, connection failed or only a particular application ignored the input.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Use the accessory’s instructions to enable pairing.
  2. Open Settings, Remotes and Devices, then Bluetooth.
  3. Select the intended accessory.
  4. Complete any displayed code or pairing prompt.

Hypothetical comparison: a keyboard connects and types in a system search field, but a player does not expose an editable field at that point. Re-pairing is not the only explanation to investigate. The player’s screen design and documented input support become the more relevant questions.

When to stop or ask for help

Contact the accessory manufacturer when it never becomes discoverable or repeatedly loses its connection. Check the actual model’s support before assuming that any Bluetooth product is a suitable television input device.
