Applies to: A form or interface marks something visually without a clear textual explanation.
The useful distinctions
- Textual error identification helps users understand what is wrong.
- An error report should identify the affected item as well as the observed message.
- Sensitive field values are usually unnecessary in a publicly shared diagnostic example.
Describe the missing explanation
A red outline can show that something happened without explaining which requirement was unmet. A useful report names the affected field and quotes only the short error text actually supplied, if there is any. If the interface shows only colour, say so. Do not invent a validation rule from that colour or assume that the account is rejected. The immediate barrier is that the viewer cannot identify the problem or determine a next step.
Keep the entered value private
The original field may contain an email address, order reference or other personal detail. Its full value often adds nothing to a report about missing error identification. Use a neutral example if reproduction is appropriate, or provide a carefully redacted crop. If a verified support conversation needs a particular value, keep that separate from the shareable explanation. The task can be described clearly without publishing the personal data entered during the failed attempt.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional form outlines Reference in red after submission but supplies no readable explanation. A viewer reports the field label, action and absence of text, using a neutral reference in the reproduction. They do not guess that the order is invalid or post the actual customer reference in a public screenshot. The enquiry asks what the indicator means and how the error can be understood in a readable form.
A focused way to proceed
- Record the field or task label and any actual error words.
- Describe a colour-only or unclear indicator without guessing its meaning.
- Use a neutral reproduction or redacted image instead of publishing the original personal value.
When to stop or ask for help
Ask for the error’s readable explanation and a usable correction path, sharing personal values only when a verified private process needs them.
